There are many important issues to consider when choosing a caregiver, including the type of agency to work with. There are many different types of agencies. Understanding the differences before you make this important decision is critical.

Some agencies only provide a list of private caregivers – giving you the task to call, screen, interview, hire and manage this employee. It may seem less costly, but you become responsible for unforeseen risks and responsibilities if you agree to become the employer.

KNOW THE RISKS!

Here are some important things to consider before you put yourself and/or a loved one in the position of being an employer instead of client.

By law, the employer is responsible for:

*Social security taxes.
*Unemployment compensation.
*Payroll taxes.
*Workers’ compensation should the caregiver be injured on the   job.
*Any - and all penalties associated with the
  responsibilities of an employer.
*Managing all issues/problems with the caregiver.
